Idiomatic versus Literal Interpretations Ditropically Ambiguous Sentences Of

چکیده
"Ditropically" ambiguous sentences (each having both a literal and an idiomatic interpretation) were prepared tbr listener's discrimination judgments, and fbr silent readers' rankings on an "idiomaticity'" scale. Listeners were unable to discriminate the literal from the idiomatic versions when presented with randomized single sentences excised from paragraph contexts. There was a bias toward interpreting the sentences as idioms, which correlated with rankings of each sentence fbr its likelihood of idiomatic use. Listeners were easily able to identify' the literal and the idiomatic versions of the same ditropic sentences presented in pairs or singularly, when speakers sought purposively to convey the contrasting meanings.

The perceptual and acoustic characteristics of Korean idiomatic and literal sentences
Previous studies have suggested that formulaic and literal expressions are stored and processed according to differing characteristics, and that certain auditory–acoustic cues serve to distinguish formulaic from literal meanings. This study took these observations a step further by investigating listeners’ ability to discriminate between literal or idiomatic exemplars of ambiguous utterances an...
متن کاملListeners' identification and evaluation of Korean idiomatic utterances produced by persons with left- or right-hemisphere damage.
This study investigates the effects of left- (LHD) or right-hemisphere damage (RHD) on the production of matched idiomatic or literal expressions by examining healthy listeners' abilities to identify, evaluate and perceptually characterize the utterances. Native speakers of Korean with LHD or RHD and healthy controls (HCs) produced six ditropically ambiguous (idiomatic or literal) sentences in ...
متن کاملHemispheric differences in processing the literal interpretation of idioms: converging evidence from behavioral and fMRI studies.
The present study examined the role of the left (LH) and right (RH) cerebral hemispheres in processing alternative meanings of idiomatic sentences. We conducted two experiments using ambiguous idioms with plausible literal interpretations as stimuli. In the first experiment we tested hemispheric differences in accessing either the literal or the idiomatic meaning of idioms for targets presented...
متن کاملProduction of Korean Idiomatic Utterances Following Left- and Right-Hemisphere Damage: Acoustic Studies.
PURPOSE This study investigates the effects of left- and right-hemisphere damage (LHD and RHD) on the production of idiomatic or literal expressions utilizing acoustic analyses. METHOD Twenty-one native speakers of Korean with LHD or RHD and in a healthy control (HC) group produced 6 ditropically ambiguous (idiomatic or literal) sentences in 2 different speech tasks: elicitation and repetitio...
متن کاملIs the comprehension of idiomatic sentences indeed impaired in paranoid Schizophrenia? A window into semantic processing deficits
Schizophrenia patients have been reported to be more impaired in comprehending non-literal than literal language since early studies on proverbs. Preference for literal rather than figurative interpretations continues to be documented. The main aim of this study was to establish whether patients are indeed able to use combinatorial semantic processing to comprehend literal sentences and both co...
